The Sign of Jonah27/06/2021 Duração: 29min
People often say, “Show me a sign that God is real, and I will believe.” The generation during Jesus’ ministry was no different. Jesus does great things in Israel: comforting the afflicted, healing the sick, transforming tax collectors, forgiving sinners, casting out demons, preaching the truth, but none of it is good enough for the religious leaders. They want a messiah on their terms, one who plays by their rules. But Jesus does the will of His Father, and not theirs. He is greater than Jonah, and all who believe the sign and follow His Father become part of His family.
For Him or Against Him20/06/2021 Duração: 27min
How can two people look at the exact same event and come away with opposite conclusions? Jesus has been healing multitudes, but Matthew focuses on one demon-possessed blind and mute man whose restored sight and speech cause division. This is the second time Jesus is accused of casting out demons by the power of demons, but this time He refutes the accusation and reveals the power at work in His kingdom.
Lord of the Sabbath13/06/2021 Duração: 30min
Few issues were as controversial in the ministry of Jesus as what He did on the Sabbath. He invites all who labor and are heavy laden to come to Him, find rest, and reject the taskmasters who would bind heavy burdens. He gives rest to soul and body, renewing His people through worship and Sabbath every week.
The Rest of Christ06/06/2021 Duração: 28min
Jesus invites all the weary and burdened to come to Him and find rest. It’s the one place in Scripture where He explicitly speaks about His heart, the place from which “flows the springs of life” (Prov. 4:23). He is gentle and lowly in heart, and therefore eager to receive all who come.
Blessed are the Unoffended30/05/2021 Duração: 28min
Jesus is always consistent, but never predictable. Even mighty John the Baptizer has a hard time understanding how Jesus’ actions line up with who He is. So John asks. The God of the Bible welcomes—even requires—you to pursue Him: “ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt. 7:7). But this is not an inquiry to find out if Jesus agrees with you. It’s to figure out if you agree with Him, and adjust accordingly. Blessed are those who are not offended by Him.
The Spirit of Adoption23/05/2021 Duração: 28min
Everyone who comes to the Father though the Son is brought there by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit applies all the blessings of salvation to us because He identifies us with Jesus Himself. It’s by the Spirit that we conquer sin and look toward our complete adoption, calling out, “Abba, Father.”
The Cost of Discipleship16/05/2021 Duração: 29min
God calls us to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This means that other things which demand our ultimate allegiance must be rejected. Another way to say this is that the cost of following Jesus is total. For many this sounds extreme and enslaving because we assume that we have a right to serve ourselves (and not God) and thereby find freedom and fulfillment. But God made us to serve Him so completely that we lose our life, and when we do, by way of one of His deep paradoxes, we truly find it.
Sheep in the Midst of Wolves09/05/2021 Duração: 28min
The disciples are sent out empowered to gather the lost sheep of the house of Israel. They’ll cast out unclean spirits, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and many people will receive them and the good news. But Jesus also paints a realistic picture of the intense persecution they will face. Rather than teach the disciples tricks to avoid trouble altogether, He shows them how to lean in and overcome it.
The Christian and Christ’s Enemies02/05/2021 Duração: 38min
A jarring reality in the midst of our indiscriminately ‘tolerant’ society is the Bible’s insistence that there are, foundationally, two kinds of people in the world. While these two groups may appear to be endlessly varied, they may all be simplified into a pair of opposing categories. There are citizens of heaven - those saved by grace through faith in Christ - and the enemies of the cross of Christ. And many who think themselves members of the former group are actually of the latter. In this morning’s passage, Paul pleads with the Philippians to stand firm – persevering in the faith, that they may avoid the destruction waiting Christ’s enemies and receive the blessed hope that is guaranteed by the very power that Christ is using even now to assert his authority over all creation.
To the Lost Sheep25/04/2021 Duração: 32min
The reason you are hearing the gospel today is because Jesus sent out the apostles. He preached the kingdom of God and went through Israel teaching and healing, which equipped His disciples to imitate Him. Chapter ten is a sermon on mission which is full of wisdom to receive and apply in the church and our individual lives.
