    04/03/2018 Duração: 01h04min

A letter from loyal listener Jim in British Columbia reminds Larre that it's September and he is not hunting. Send YOUR email to [email protected]

  • TTT Ep 031 Salmon Are Jumping in Resurrection and Driftwood Bays

    01/08/2017 Duração: 42min

This is the first of four episodes reporting on our 8-day cruise from Seward to Montague Island, which is about 65 miles east across the northern edge of the Gulf of Alaska. We anchored up every night in quiet bays, and spent the days fishing for salmon, rock fish, salmon, halibut, and more salmon.   First we hear from new friends of the podcast—Clinton and Julie Crites listened to the podcast while they drove from Georgia to Seward, Alaska with their daughter Jaelyn. Clinton shares some stories from their first experience living in Alaska, when they spent a year on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska.    Cherie and Pat Godar, friends who came along on the cruise with us, give the report on Day One of the trip as we were anchored up in Driftwood Bay. Wildlife spotting included Dall porpoises, Stellar sea lions, eagles, sea otters, cormorants, pigeon guillemots, harbor seals and a humpback whale.   Do you have a story to share, or a park you’d like others to know about? We’d love to hear from you.  Let

  • TTT Ep 032 Exploring Prince William Sound, Gulf of Alaska and Montague Island

    01/08/2017 Duração: 42min

We crossed the north edge of the Gulf of Alaska to reach Montague Island, where we spent Day Two and Day Three of the 8-day cruise.    As we were anchored in Macleod Harbor the evening of Day Two, Cherie gave a report on our wildlife sighings while she was fishing for halibut at the stern of the Best Friends. She and I thought we’d seen Dall porpoises but we learned later they were harbor porpoises, Other sightings included Sitka blacktail deer, a humpback whale and seals. Larre and Pat were up on the sundeck, watching deer through their binoculars. They tell about trolling for salmon and losing part of one of the two down riggers. Larre describes how to tell the difference between halibut and flounder, and how to land a salmon versus a halibut.   On the evening of Day Three, all four of us gathered in the salon of the Best Friends to review the day’s activities.More animal sightings were reported, along with a successful fishing report. Larre described how he chose a location to look for halibut, Pat describ

  • TTT Ep 033 Sea Lions, Eagles and Gulls at Elrington Island, Plus the Safety Talk

    01/08/2017 Duração: 01h14min

The recap of Day Four was recorded the following morning because Joyce had been a bit under the weather. We tried several locations on a hunt for rock fish along the south end of Montague Island. The seas were a bit rougher, but that didn’t slow down the fish. Larre described some of his fishing equipment and technique, and we also got the first update on the Epic North Pacific Cribbage Tournament. We wrap up the morning discussion with Larre describing what to do in emergency situations.   The recap of Day Five included a report on how we did on the hunt for rock fish, which was interrupted by frequent encounters with salmon. We discuss pelagic versus non-pelagic, and various species of rock fish. Larre got out a nautical chart, talked about points of interest and told us how deep is a fathom. We describe watching a humpback whale feeding, spotting a big group of Stellar sea lions on their haul out near where we anchored up in South Twin Bay on Elrington Island, and watching eagles and gulls vying for fish s

  • TTT Ep 034 Baby Seal, Rock Fish and Salmon; Killer Bay and Seward Harbor

    01/08/2017 Duração: 01h10min

Day Six started with a breakfast that included halibut cheeks, and some close encounters with a sea lion. We fished for rock fish and halibut off of Elringon Island then finished the day by cruising west back to Driftwood Bay. It was a late day, and Larre was a little tired when he had a little mix-up while cleaning fish,   On Day Seven we spotted goats near the mountain tops of Driftwood Bay, and seals in Killer Bay. After a slow start, we had good luck fishing even though we were distracted by nearby whales.    Day Eight was like three days in one: catching our limit of salmon in the morning, cruising the shoreline and whale watching in the afternoon, then cleaning and relaxing in Seward in the evening. Results of the Epic North Pacific Cribbage Tournament are announced.   Do you have a story to share, or a park you’d like others to know about? The last night of the drive from Minnesota to Alaska -- Larre and Joyce made it to Seward on the sixth day of travel. • TTT Ep 026 Raspberry Island Deer in December

    30/05/2017 Duração: 43min

An "easy" hunt for blacktail deer along the coast turned out to be more challenging than expected, and chilly. Our Park PSA was suggested by listener Hannah from Western Australia, who told us about Lane Poole Reserve in Dwellingup. Looks like a great place to go bushwalking.
