Stop eating beef, pork and chicken and our environmental problems will be solved. At least that's what films like Cowspiracy want you to believe. But, in fact, when you consider everything we eat and the way we eat it, meat and other animal products barely scratch the surface. In this episode of The Foodcast, we look at the big picture and explore how the entire farm-to-table lifecycle effects our planet. Maybe the farm isn't the best place to start. Then, I speak to three entrepreneurs who are focusing on a different and very sensible place and they're doing so in an innovative way. All this and the usual shenanigans right here on The Foodcast. 00:17     Introduction 02:00     Rant 09:28     Interview with Elspeth Collard, Bridget Williams and Leila Rasmussen 31:23     RTC Initiative Beta Test 38:37     Wrap Up For complete show notes, head on over to  https://www.daveyhwellness.com/foodcast/not-throwaway

  • Episode 0035 - Sugar Substitute Rabbit Hole

    09/05/2017 Duração: 51min

Artificial Sweeteners, what a “rabbit hole!” By rabbit hole, I refer to the Wikipedia definition, “a metaphor for an entry into the unknown, the disorientating or the mentally deranging, from its use in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”  In this metaphor, artificial sweeteners stand in for the rabbit. I’m Alice (although I look better in a navy blue dress than a sky blue one). The hole is a symbol for my attempt to make sense of this topic. In this episode of The Foodcast, we explore the usual science, history, politics and culture of sugar substitutes. Sprinkled throughout is advice on how to have healthy relationship with these substances. 00:46     Introduction 01:52     Background Info 06:17     What Do Government Experts Say? 18:55     Are All Sugar Substitutes the Same? 24:51     What Does the Research Say? 38:02     What Should I Do Next 48:31     Wrap Up For complete show notes, head on over to http://www.daveyhwellness.com/foodcast/sugar-substitute-foodcast/

    24/04/2017 Duração: 30min

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. And that's what happened to me in the production of this week's episode of The Foodcast. But resilience breeds perseverance and the results is an action packed episode in which you learn how to grill responsibly (and for optimal health) and the perils of salt, both too much and too little. • Foodcast Episode 0031 - Food Wonk

    24/03/2017 Duração: 41min

A wonk is someone who takes an excessive interest in minor details of political policy. Ergo, a word you’d expect a wonk to use, a food wonk is someone with an excessive interest in minor details of food policy and its politics. Longtime listeners of The Foodcast may think this is an apt description of someone associated with this show (i.e., the host). We touch on this subject all the time but this time we go deep. We start off with a rant about the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. We talk about the process, its problems and how it affects you. Next, we discuss my attendance at a meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in which every special interest imaginable spent an entire day debating what the word “healthy” means. It makes for fascinating podcast material…to people who have nothing better to do. And since I assume you do have better things to do, I try and keep it accessible and light but c’mon. We spent an entire day debating the word healthy. What do you expect? 00:21     Intro

  • Foodcast Episode 0030 - Save the World...With Donuts

    17/03/2017 Duração: 43min

In this episode of The Foodcast we meet Rob Krupicka, a tech entrepreneur and public servant who moved into the food service business, specifically donuts, so he could really make a difference. Rob takes us through the process of how he made this transition, how he manages risk by adding a twist to the standard donut shop model (hint: it involves cocktails), and how he designed his business from the ground up to make his community a better place.  Also, your host, Davey H, discusses the "Save the World" part of The Karma Sense Eating Plan and what intentional not-so-random acts of kindness have to do with food in the first place. All this and the usual shenanigans in this episode of The Karma Sense Foodcast. 00:19     Introduction 01:02     Rant - Save the World! 09:01     Interview - Rob Krupicka 37:45     Sugar Shack Tour 40:25     Wrap Up For complete show notes, please visit http://www.daveyhwellness.com/foodcast/save-world-donuts/

  • Foodcast Episode 0028 - Traceability

    03/03/2017 Duração: 52min

Traceability is the ability to track any food through all stages of production, processing and distribution. It sounds like something we as consumers should never care about. And indeed it is something targeted towards regulators and supply chain managers. But whenever we as consumers make a decision about what we're going to eat, and in making that decision, we base it on any consideration other than pleasure or hedonic hunger, it's because we believe the chosen food will satisfy some condition. And there's no way for us to be sure that condition is met unless it's traceable. In this episode of the Foodcast, we explore the concept of traceability. We also meet Ed Morgan at the Hampshire Meats processing plant and learn about humane animal slaughter. Being "humane" is one thing when it's casually stamped on a food label. It's something else when you experience the process. This and more on episode 0028 of The Foodcast 01:15     Introduction 02:24     Rant - Traceability 13:54     Interview with Ed Morgan
