Fun fact: Sam had a tummy ache while recording this episode and was being so brave about it.  Unlike our dear Roderick Usher, who finds himself incapable of making the ultimate sacrifice to save his children. This week, we’re breaking down the fifth episode of Mike Flanagan’s Fall of the House of Usher which adapts Poe’s most well-known tale, “The Tell-Tale Heart”.  In “The Tell-Tale Heart” we follow an unnamed narrator describing their meticulous plan to murder an old man with a "vulture-like" eye. The narrator is obsessed with the old man's eye, which they find unsettling. They eventually carry out the murder and hide the old man's dismembered body beneath the floorboards. However, consumed by guilt and paranoia, the narrator starts to hear the old man's heartbeat emanating from the floorboards. The sound becomes increasingly unbearable, leading to the narrator confessing to the murder to silence the imagined heartbeat. It’s finally over.  We’ve reached the end.  Of Jeff’s story.  After a pretty lackluster start to a new trilogy, Saw V picks up literally seconds after the end of its predecessor, leaving Strahm trapped with the corpse of John Kramer. That doesn’t last long as he escapes his first trap and begins a cat-and-mouse game with Detective Mark Hoffman--Jigsaw’s chosen successor.  Meanwhile, a ragtag team finds themselves trapped by Jigsaw, and it’s a race against the clock to figure out how to get out of this twisted escape room. And another one bites the dust.  This week in our minishow, we say goodbye to Leo Usher as he has a tough run-in with a purebred shelter cat. Saw IV is the beginning of a new era in the franchise. John Kramer is Dead. Amanda is dead. Leigh Whannel is no longer writing. And Mark Hoffman is here.  What do you mean who?  Mark Hoffman. The cop who was in like 30 seconds of the last movie. Turns out the twist of IV is that a character that was barely established in the previous film is the true successor of Jigsaw. Kind of. Like Amanda, Mark isn’t very good at his job--in my humblest of opinions.  At least he’s hot though.  We also look deeper into John Kramer and what made him the way he was. And let’s just say he had a really rough year. Mike Flanagan continues to impress us with his knowledge of both the works of Edgar Allan Poe and his knowledge of the man himself.  This week, we’re diving into episode three of Fall of the House of Usher, loosely based on the short story “Murders in Rue Morgue”.  In “Murders in the Rue Morgue”, Edgar Allan Poe introduces the character C. Auguste Dupin, a brilliant detective who uses his analytical skills to solve crimes. The story begins with the brutal murders of Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter Camille in their locked apartment in the Rue Morgue in Paris. The police are baffled by the lack of evidence and the seemingly impossible nature of the crime. Dupin becomes interested in the case and, using his powers of deduction quickly solves the mystery. He discovers that the murders were committed by an escaped orangutan, which had been trained to perform tricks and had escaped from its owner. Saw III marks a major shift in the Saw franchise as we see Jigsaw die at the hands of his greatest enemy...Jeff? The Stormy Skies can’t stop watching Death Note, which means we’ve made it to the final arc of the series. That’s right, with nine episodes left, L is dead, Rem is dead, and Light has done nothing to make him worthy of the adorable and perfect Misa Amane.  There’s also been a slight hiccup with our 2024 plans to do a Saw retrospective. As in, the series is no longer on Shudder. But there’s no need to fear because it’ll probably end up on Peacock. Oh no! This week we discover that there’s a second Kira who’s made a deal to get the Shinigami eyes. Will they serve as an ally to Light or a hindrance? Meanwhile, the sexual tension between L and Light only grows as L tests Light to see if he’d make a good fit for the task force…or to figure out if he’s really Kira.  Oh, and Chief Yagami asserts his badassery by driving a city bus into a TV station…two minutes after a serious heart attack. We also get into the Video Game Awards, and Sam has some spicy takes about Baulder’s Gate 3…no, I promise she likes it…it just wasn’t ready to be released this year. What sane studio releases a game in a Zelda year? Come on. Rookie move. Also, GotY is going to Resident Evil 4. The Japanese horror film Audition is considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Which is why we’re super pumped to finally watch it on this week’s episode of the podcast.
